SimpleScalar Tutorial at MICRO-34 - September 18, 2001
A SimpleScalar tutorial will be held at MICRO-34.  The tutorial will give an overview of the SimpleScalar tool set including the new features introduced in SimpleScalar version 4.0 (due out later this year).  Read the announcement for more details.

SimpleScalar testers - August 2, 2001
We now have enough testers for the SimpleScalar/x86 experimental release, thank you to all who offered to test the new release.  SimpleScalar/ARM testers are still being sought, interested users should send e-mail to info@simplescalar.com.

SimpleScalar in the literature - July 29, 2001
The 2001 International Conference on Parallel Architectures and Compilation Techniques (PACT-2001) has published this year's advanced program.  More than one third of the papers to be published in the conference used SimpleScalar tools to evaluate their design!  We've listed them on the "Who's Using It" page.

SimpleScalar release 3.0c available - July 10, 2001
The third pre-release of SimpleScalar version 3.0 is now available.  This release fixes all known bugs and includes improvements to the SimpleScalar/Alpha system call emulation, and a few performance optimizations.  Here's a link to the release document.

SimpleScalar/x86 experimental release available - June 7, 2001
An experimental release of SimpleScalar/x86 is now available for test. This experimental release supports user-level emulation of RedHat Linux/x86 version 7.0 applications.  We are looking for existing SimpleScalar users that are interested in getting early access to this infrastructure in exchange for assisting us in testing the functional simulation components.  In its current state SimpleScalar/x86 is able to execute a wide variety of benchmarks, so testers may begin constructing x86 microarchitecture models (using current SimpleScalar modeling infrastructure) in parallel with testing and development of the first SimpleScalar/x86 release.

Interested users, please send e-mail to info@simplescalar.com, and please indicate what benchmarks/programs you can test on the experimental release.  Note, you will need source to the program in order to build a statically linked version, and we have tested all the usual suspects, e.g., SPEC, Softfloat, and MediaBench.  Also note that this test release is only available free-of-charge to non-commercial academic users and current SimpleScalar commercial licensees.  The test release includes all simulator sources, and the current simulator build has only been tested on RedHat Linux/x86 version 7 platforms.  Here's a link to the release document.

SimpleScalar/ARM cross compiler kit available - April 03, 2001
We've put together a Linux/ARM cross compiler tool kit, these tools will allow you to build ARM ELF binaries on non-ARM machines. The kit includes the latest version of GNU GCC with Linux/ARM patches, binary utilities for ARM ELF, and pre-built libraries for linking ARM ELF binaries.  A few fixes were made since the original experimental SimpleScalar/ARM release, some fixes were needed to run cross compiled binaries, so get the updated SimpleScalar/ARM release: simplesim-arm-0.2.tar.gz.

You should be able to build these tools on most any Unix platform, and use them to generate binaries in ARM ELF format, suitable for running on SimpleScalar/ARM simulators. This release needs your testing, we've built a few benchmarks with no problems, all our tests were on Linux/x86 boxes. Here's a link to the release document.

SimpleScalar/ARM experimental release - April 02, 2001
There's an experimental version of SimpleScalar/ARM now available. This release executes Linux/ARM executables, the simulators support the ARM7 ISA and ARM FPA floating point extensions. The performance models include a validated StrongARM SA-11xx pipeline configuration, proposed XScale configurations, and Wattch and PowerAnalyzer based power and energy modeling.

This release is purely experimental, it is not yet ready for primetime but it is usable, so please e-mail me if you want access. I'm particularly interested in users who want to use the infrastructure for embedded and low-power systems research. Soon there will be available a GNU GCC based cross-compiler kit, and full release of the MiBench embedded benchmark suite.  Here's a link to the release document.

SimpleScalar release 2.0a available - July 10, 1997
Greetings, SimpleScalar release 2.0a is now available. We've completed implementation and our internal regression testing, and now we need current users to start using this code, in particular we would really appreciate:

  1. bug reports and bug fixes
  2. fixes and/or testing results on new platforms
  3. comments/suggestions regarding this release in general

It is our hope that computer architecture researchers and educators will find this release of value. We welcome your feedback, Enjoy!!
