SimpleScalar Licensing Summary
SimpleScalar LLC offers licensing of SimpleScalar tools to both non-commercial and commercial users.

Academic Non-Commercial Licenses

Academic users (e.g., users at education institutions, U.S. government research labs, and non-profit research institutes) may use SimpleScalar tools free-of-charge for non-commercial research and instruction.  Non-commercial licensees have full access to SimpleScalar tools and source code.  Support is provided as resources permit.  Academic non-commercial use licenses and the academic non-commercial distribution of SimpleScalar are available here.

Any use of SimpleScalar software, in binary or source form, in a commercial setting or application (e.g., use within a for-profit business, use to generate intellectual property for patents, or use to implement a consulting contract) for any reason, purpose or goal is commercial use of SimpleScalar software and thus requires a commercial use license from SimpleScalar LLC.  SimpleScalar LLC makes available two commercial use licenses for SimpleScalar tools, the Commercial Site License and the University Research Participation License.

Commercial Site Licenses

SimpleScalar LLC offers a commercial site license for users that wish to use SimpleScalar tools in their business. Site licenses apply to a geographically local work site, i.e., employees in the same city. For example, if a company has multiple campuses in the Boston area and one large campus in Austin, they would have to purchase two site licenses: one for the Boston campuses and one for the Austin campus. A SimpleScalar site license is given for a particular version of SimpleScalar in perpetuity, and it gives all users at that site the right to use, modify, adapt, and apply the software internally in any manner they see fit. The license includes access to all tool set source codes.

University Research Participation Licenses

SimpleScalar LLC offers a university research participation license to researchers that wish to use SimpleScalar tools to implement technology transfer of university research they sponsor. University research participation licenses permit up to 5 persons at a geographically local work site to use SimpleScalar tools. The license is given for a particular version of SimpleScalar for a period of one year, and it authorizes licensed users to use, modify, adapt, and apply SimpleScalar software for technology transfer. In order to qualify for this license, the commercial licensee must sponsor SimpleScalar-based university research in the year the license is given. The license includes access to all tool set source codes. University Research Participation licenses are available at a reduced price to facilitate the use of SimpleScalar as a technology transfer vehicle between university fundees and corporate funders.

All SimpleScalar licenses give authorized users full access to SimpleScalar source code.  In addition, commercial site licenses include support. Each licensed site receives 20 hours of support, either through e-mail or by phone. Long-term support contracts are available through SimpleScalar LLC for an additional cost.
